CoolSculpting is cryolipolysis: an applicator cools a pocket of fat to a temperature that destroys fat cells while leaving skin, nerves and muscle unharmed. The destroyed cells are cleared by the body over the following one to three months and do not return. It reduces a fat pocket by a portion, it is not a weight-loss treatment, and it does nothing for loose skin.
Here is the whole pricing model. One cycle is one applicator, on one area, for one session. It is $800 a cycle at West LA, Downtown Summerlin and Paradise Valley. How it works
Why the reduction is permanent, and why nothing happens for a month afterwards.
An applicator draws or contacts the fat pocket and cools it to a precise temperature. Fat cells crystallise at a higher temperature than skin, nerve and muscle tissue, which is the whole basis of the treatment: the fat is damaged and the tissue around it is not.
The crystallised fat cells undergo apoptosis, a controlled cell death, and are gradually cleared by your lymphatic system over the following weeks.
Because the cells are removed rather than shrunk, the reduction is permanent. Results appear from three weeks, and are usually complete by one to three months.
Which product
The honest version, including what it does not do.
Starts working: 3 weeks to 3 months. Lasts: Permanent. It works on what it is for: reducing a discrete, pinchable fat pocket in someone near their target weight. It is not a weight-loss treatment, it will not tighten skin, and results are a reduction of the pocket rather than its removal. A rare paradoxical response, where the treated area enlarges instead, is a documented risk your provider will discuss.
Starts working: 1 to 2 weeks downtime. Lasts: Permanent. Surgical, so it removes far more fat in one go and can address a larger volume. It also means anaesthesia, incisions and real recovery. CoolSculpting is the trade of a smaller result for no downtime.
Starts working: Swelling 3 to 7 days. Lasts: Permanent. Injectable rather than applied, so it reaches small pockets like the submental area that an applicator cannot sit on properly. $800 a session.
Starts working: 2 to 4 days. Lasts: Up to 12 months. These treat skin laxity, not fat volume. If the problem is loose skin rather than a fat pocket, no fat treatment will improve it.
Good to know
And, just as usefully, what it will not.
Treated fat cells are destroyed and cleared, not shrunk, so they do not refill with weight fluctuation.
Flanks, lower abdomen and inner thighs are the classic stubborn deposits, and are the strongest indications.
No incisions, no anaesthesia, no recovery. Most patients return to work the same day.
With more than one applicator, two areas can be treated in a single appointment.
It reduces a pocket, it does not reduce your weight meaningfully. It suits people already near their target.
If loose skin is the concern, Morpheus8, Evolve or Ultherapy address it and this does not.
The treated cells are gone permanently, but the ones left behind respond to weight gain like any others.
Aftercare
There is no downtime. There is, however, a wait.
The area is cold, firm and often oddly shaped from the applicator. A short massage helps break up the treated tissue. Most people go straight back to work.
Numbness, tingling, tenderness or mild bruising in the treated area are all normal and settle on their own.
Nothing visible happens. This is the part patients find frustrating and it is entirely expected.
The first visible change as cleared fat cells reduce the pocket.
The full result of that round arrives. Progress photos are the only reliable way to judge it.
Common where a pocket is larger, planned once the first round has fully resolved rather than before.
Destroyed cells do not return. A stable weight is what protects the result.

Allergan Aesthetics says it permanently eliminates up to 20 to 25% of the treated fat layer, based on a small clinical study, and that it is FDA-cleared for visible fat bulges in nine areas. It is not a weight-loss treatment.

CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared, and Allergan says most side effects are temporary: redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tenderness, cramping and numbness. Rare side effects occur in 1 to 10 of every 10,000 treatments, including a visible enlargement of the treated area 2 to 5 months later that does not resolve on its own and may need surgery. Your provider will go through this at consultation.
Typical side effects are temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, stinging, tenderness, cramping, skin inflammation and aching, plus itching, sensitivity, tingling or numbness that can last up to several weeks. After treatment under the chin or jawline, throat discomfort is possible. The rare enlargement described above is the one to know about.
Changes usually start to show from about three weeks, with the full result of a round at around one to three months as the body clears the treated fat cells.
Allergan says that during treatment you may feel pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching or cramping, and that these lessen as the area goes numb. Afterwards the area can be red, swollen, bruised, firm or tender for a while, and numbness or tingling can last several weeks.
It depends on the size of the fat bulge and your goal. Many plans use one or two rounds per area, and your provider sets the number of cycles at assessment. Allergan says up to 20 to 25% of the treated fat layer is eliminated per treatment in its study.
CoolSculpting and CoolSculpting Elite are FDA-cleared for visible fat bulges under the chin, under the jawline, on the thighs, abdomen and flanks, bra fat, back fat, under the buttocks (banana roll) and upper arms. They are also cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with treatment under the chin.
Little to none, according to Allergan. Most people go back to work and normal activities the same day. Expect temporary redness, swelling, firmness, tenderness or numbness in the treated area.
The treated fat cells are eliminated permanently, according to Allergan. The fat cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, so a stable weight keeps the result.
Someone near their goal weight with a visible, pinchable fat bulge in one of the FDA-cleared areas, in good general health. It is not a weight-loss treatment. You should not have CoolSculpting if you have cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, and you should tell your provider about pregnancy, recent surgery or a hernia.
Only under the chin and under the jawline, which are the two facial areas CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for. It is not used on the cheeks or elsewhere on the face. For other facial concerns your provider may suggest filler, Kybella or skin tightening.
Liposuction is surgery: it removes more fat in one session but involves anaesthesia, incisions and recovery. CoolSculpting is non-surgical with little to no downtime, and Allergan says it eliminates up to 20 to 25% of the treated fat layer per treatment, so the change is smaller and gradual. Neither is a weight-loss treatment.
