Alternatives to Hormone Replacement Therapy That work

A person unable to take the bio-identical hormonal therapy to control menopausal symptoms, may want to consider alternatives to hormone replacement therapy.

Your hormones must be in balance for optimal functioning of your body. However, hormone levels decline with age, causing major health problems that lead to loss of libido, lethargy, excessive weight gain/loss, and hot flushes. Hormone Replacement Therapy works by providing synthetic versions of the hormones to restore a healthy balance in the body.

Some women have found great relief from symptoms of insomnia, vaginal dryness, night sweats and hot flushes by HRT. Unfortunately, when HRT is stopped, a menopausal woman will experience these symptoms again as the hormone levels decline. HRT is not suitable for women who cannot take certain hormonal treatments. For instance, women with breast cancer cannot take estrogen. However, there are alternatives to hormone replacement therapy to treat menopausal symptoms. They may not be as effective but they provide some relief.

Exercise

Regular exercises can significantly reduce hot flushes and improve sleep.

Anti-Depressants

Antidepressant medications are non-estrogen treatments recommended as a primary treatment for hot flashes in women who cannot take estrogen.

Herbal Remedies

Some menopausal women have opted for herbal treatments as a natural remedy for hot flushes and night sweats. However, there are safety concerns about some herbs, which like estrogen might stimulate breast tissue. Herbal treatments are not recommended for hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms.

Estrogen

Low-dose vaginal estrogen is an effective treatment for postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness or pain with intercourse.
